Inklingo MAIN LUCY BOSTON PAGE

Lucy Boston was born in England in 1892, and lived to be 98 years old. She designed and made at least twenty amazing patchworks in her long life, but she is more famous as the author of the Green Knowe children's books, for her ancient manor house and garden near Cambridge in England, and for her long, creative old age.

Lucy Boston published her first books when she was in her sixties, and she continued to write, sew, and garden when she was in her nineties. She was an extraordinary person, and still inspires affection and admiration today.

My pattern book for The Patchwork of the Crosses (POTC) was prepared with the gracious assistance of Diana Boston (Lucy Boston's daughter-in-law), and is illustrated with photographs by Julia Hedgecoe.

1. Choice of Methods

Lucy Boston sewed all of her quilts with templates and the method known as English Paper Piecing. You can use Inklingo to print templates for EPP, but these designs are faster and easier with a running stitch by hand, or by machine. If you sew with a running stitch, it is more portable, easier to prepare (no templates, no basting), faster to sew, and the stitches don't show on the front.

If you prefer English Paper Piecing, you can print the Inklingo templates without seam alowances and cut several layers of paper at a time with a rotary cutter. (In addition to the shapes to print on fabric, every Inklingo shape collection includes the shapes without seam allowances for templates.)
